How To Have Iconic Curls: Curly Girl Diaries

Lois Wilson

There is no aura quite like that of a curly girl whose hair is giving. If you’re stepping into curly girl season ready to shine, don’t let frizz, humidity, or the elements dim your crown. Here’s how to keep your curls defined, hydrated, and beautiful.

Start With Moisture

Curly hair naturally tends to be drier than straight hair, that is why products that promote hydration and moisture are a curly girls best defence against frizz. To keep your extensions looking their best, regularly refresh them with water and a lightweight leave-in conditioner. For a lightwave leave-in your curls will love- we recommend the Amika Hydro-Rush Intense Moisture which can be used on a weekly or biweekly basis to add in some essential moisture and love. For extensions always avoid oils.  Heavy products with shea and castor oils can weigh down the curls or cause build-up.

Refresh Instead of Rewashing

Yes your hair needs moisture, but washing too frequently can lead to dryness and frizz. Instead, create a simple refresh routine by lightly misting the hair with water and gently scrunching the curls back into shape. This helps revive definition without stripping moisture. For our curls we absolutely love this spray mist. Its honestly like light rainforest mist. Powerful and smooth with even coverage. You can buy it here

Define

Curls appreciate care and are best manipulated when damp and coated with conditioner or mousse. Start from the ends and work your way up using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb. Brushing dry curls can disrupt the curl pattern and create unnecessary frizz. After using the spray mist above, a mousse we love is the Mielle Pomergranate and Honey Curl Defining Mousse. This mousse offers hold without the crunch of gels - meaning less product build up, less dryness and more days between wash day.

Protect Your Hair at Night

One of the easiest ways to extend the life of your curls is to protect them while you sleep. Use a satin or silk bonnet, scarf, or pillowcase to reduce friction and help maintain curl definition overnight. Another way to make your waves last the next day is to put your curls in a very loose braid.

Avoid Excessive Heat

While curly extensions can be heat styled, just like your own hair, excessive heat may loosen the curl pattern over time. If using heat tools, always apply a heat protectant and keep temperatures moderate. The Amika Shield Heat Protectant, protects against styling tools up to 230c as well as UV rays and humidity so if you must straighten your curls- we recommend this all in one!

Managing Your Leave Out

If your curly extensions have a different pattern to your leave out,  try flexi rods or perm rods with a touch of defining mousse so that you wake up with curls that do not require heat manipulation.
