September doesn't ask permission. One day you're dragging enjoying the last of summer, the final trip, the last dance (we know some were shaking a leg at Notting Hill Carnival last week) and then the next, the air shifts, the rain is back, the to do lists are out, and something in you sits up straighter and it might not be your hair. Call it the campus shift or the autumnal equinox, call it main character persona, the winter arc, the great lock in, call it whatever you like but if we're talking autumn hair looks this season, there's one rule: you are walking in done.
Which raises the real question. What does ‘done’ actually mean?
‘Done’ is not a texture or style. It's an intention.

For many of us, ‘having your hair done’ was shorthand for one very specific outcome. Straight, sleek, silent. But that definition never had room for the rest of us. This season, done means we’re making noise. A naturally defined, loud and curly wash and go is done. Your knotless braids that took 8 hours and zero patience are done. Your twist out/perm rod situation at the front of your half wig that’s an overnight prayer and better for it is very done.
Done isn't a look. It's the difference between hair that happened to you this morning and hair you decided on.
That distinction matters more this season than most, because ‘done’ is walking back into rooms it hasn't been in for a while, lecture halls, boardrooms, first days. And every texture gets to walk in with it. So much so that ‘I like the new look’ becomes ‘who is this new look’. Done means setting your intention. Intentionally decide who you are going to turn up and be today.
The Texture Report Card: What's In (and What's Taking Annual Leave) This September
If we're forecasting autumn curly hair the way the fashion pages forecast a runway, here's the read.
IN: The Twist Out. Or the braid out we're not picky, we just want the definition. Who remembers before the first day of school, watching a curly YouTube tutorial and praying your hair cooperates by the morning? Aaliyah Jay in her natural hair bag. MoKnowsHair. JourneyToWaistLengthHair. HazelGoddess. Jewjewbee. They got us through some hair struggles and reminded us there is always space in the room for our natural texture. With intention behind it, natural hair is done.

IN: Chunky Braids, and we mean chunky. Think two juicy braided ponytails. A double bun situation. Two low braided ponytails, two high. Jumbo knotless braids. Four stitch braids back into a bun. There is a styling option here for every mood you'll have this season, and every style will go. And your scalp will thank you for it too, a chunky braid look mean less tension at the root, more breathing room for your edges, and a style that protects without punishing. A win on every front.
.

IN, (briefly): The Silk Press. We all need a trim this season, and some dead ends need letting go of, hair and otherwise. But a reset doesn't have to mean weeks committed to one look. Have your week of getting it together, enjoy the silk press, then get back to your campus shift, (the lock in). Silk press season makes an appearance, and tidies up. It doesn't move in.
VERY IN: The Half Wig. This season is about doing things on our terms, on our schedule, not someone else's. Curly hair extensions this autumn are living under one address: clip, blend, and go. The convenience is the whole brand now. Nothing says ‘locked in’ quite like your autumn hair extensions done, your routine untouched, and your half wig doing all the heavy lifting

OUT: dead straight, no movement. We are entering a new season. The hair should know that and move with us.
OUT: length, for now. We're fully here for 18" and shorter. If somebody could deliver a Kyoto curly bob this instant, we would not complain.
ON ANNUAL LEAVE: the Fulani braids and weave at the back. She served, we appreciated her, and she'll be warmly welcomed back next season. For now, she's resting.
IN: a colour change, if the itch is real. Someone out there has been eyeing a copper, brown, or auburn situation. This is your season. Scratch it.
We could go on. We'll leave it here with our texture report card, as food for thought.
The Mantra: Why keeping your ‘hair done’ is actually a wellbeing thing with the science to back it up.
There's a reason "look good, feel good" isn't just a saying the internet repeats, it’s a tried and tested phenomena and if you haven’t yet discovered it, we are holding your hand as we say this. Repeat after me: When I look good, I feel good, and when I feel good I do good because I am good. AKA, I AM THAT GIRL!
A seasonal hair change isn't just aesthetic, it's a reset and the science backs that up. Grooming rituals are linked to real boosts in confidence and a sense of control, which matters most exactly when everything else feels new. New term, new job, new city, new gym, new products, new routine. Hair is one of the few things in that chaos you get to fully author. It's not vanity to keep it done. It's one of the few controllable inputs when everything else is in flux which is precisely why this season rewards the effort more than most.
When we look good, we feel good and it's science. Getting your hair done triggers a small win, and small wins release dopamine, the brain's reward chemical. That dopamine release increases serotonin, the hormone tied to mood, confidence, and self esteem which is exactly why a fresh style doesn't just change how you look, it changes how you carry yourself.
So as the calendar turns, don't think of ‘getting your hair done’ as a single appointment. Think of it as a standing decision you're making about how you want to move through the season. Polished, playful, entirely on your own terms, with whatever texture you choose to present yourself with. Be you and let your hair do the talking.
This season, done doesn't mean one thing. It means your thing. Decided, defined, and dressed for the room.
With love and curls,
xoxo
